Grave Inscriptions In St.Mary’s Churchyard

St. Mary’s Churchyard & James Ryan.

The following collection of gravestone inscriptions are to be found in the cemetery which surrounds St Mary’s (Church of Ireland) Church in Thurles, County Tipperary. Where posible, these inscriptions have been checked against ‘The Journal for the Preservation of the Memorials of the Dead,’ which are to be found in the Local Studies Dept. of Thurles Library. All the inscriptions below are incised.

The Church building itself is a comparatively modern building, early 1800, but evidently stands on the site of a much older one. This parish was impropriate in the Abbey of Owney, County of Limerick, and in 1202 Abbot Hugh mortgaged this church to Italian merchants. After the dissolution of the monasteries it was handed over to Walter Ap Howell, and after him to Pierce Walsh and his descendants.

The work of compiling these headstone inscriptions was painstakingly undertaken by Mr James Ryan, Dublin Road, Thurles, and it is the hope of ‘Hidden Tipperary’ that this information will be of some assistance to persons involved in tracing their family roots, here in Thurles, Co.Tipperary.

The numbers shown in brackets after each inscription refer to the position of that grave stone in the graveyard. Spellings have not been changed to the modern accepted spelling of names and any person consulting this record is advised to look for a name under every possible spelling.

  1. Denis says:

I’ve visited your site Hidden Tipperary, that is were I got some of my genealogy research from. The one gravestone entry on William O’Shea stated that he erected the stone in March of 1872. Well with that info, I was able to get his wife’s name & death certificate.
One of these days I’ll make it to Ireland but I have so many places to see as I’ve traced my roots to Tipperary, Cavan, Donegal, Offaly and Londenderry.
Thanks again for the genealogy info on the site and for taking the time to help me!

  2. Helen Morningstar says:

I have never been out of Australia but my maiden name is Conroy and while researching that family history I stumbled across your site. The poingancy of this place is significant to my own area. Many Irish people from your area settled here or were sent here. Many obviously beat a desperate retreat from certain death. This is both a Catholic and Protestant area. We have places called Ballan Daylesford Mt Egerton Wallace Gordan Bolwarrah Dean Newlyn and people called by nearly every name in your cemetery. I was wondering if Pudding Lane and the Quarry were actual places or just descriptions.Tanks a lot. Helen Morningstar.

    • Admin says:

      Hi Helen,
      Nice to hear from you.
      (1) Pudding Lane, also known as Jail Street was the name of what is now known as O’Donovan Rossa Street. Rossa street is so named in memory of Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa (September 1831 – 29 June 1915), who was an Irish Fenian leader and prominent member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. The original name, Pudding Lane, was copied from a street in London, formerly the location of Thomas Farriner’s bakehouse where the Great Fire of London began in 1666. This street in London allegedly is named after the entrails and organs which would fall from the carts coming down the Lane from the butchers in Eastcheap as they headed for the waste barges on the Thames river. Perhaps here In Thurles at this time the same may have been a similar situation. It was on this street that Thurles housed its town jail, long since gone. See link: http://www.thurles.info/2008/11/07/cormack-brothers-john-gore-jones-investigates-ellis-death/
      (2) Quarry refers to a small area east of the town of Thurles, and is as the name suggests, a place where hard limestone was mined for a time. Same is in the area which today incorporates Mitchell St, Kickham St, St Mary’s Lane, Borroway areas etc. Area also known locally as The Pike, with the origins of this name not entirely clear. Possibly this area contained a barriers to prevent horses from accessing foot paths, or in other instances block passage until a toll had been paid by persons entering or passing through this area. See Link: http://www.faminemuseum.com/
      Trusting this explains your queries.
Should you decide to visit Ireland, give us a call and we will help you with you travel arrangements and accomodation etc here in Thurles.
      Regards George

We have been researching for over 35 years and have hit a brick wall with our research. We know that they came from Thurles Tipperary Ireland and married in Adelaide South Australia 21/1/1860, however we cannot find when they arrived in Australia. They settled in Geelong Victoria Australia around 1861 and had several children of which I am a g-g-grandaughter. My surname is County? maybe Maher
Michael County m Anastasia Manton Tipperary. James County m Catherine Mc Carthy
Parents John Mc Carthy m Mary Ryan Tipperary – any information appreciated.

    • George says:

Having difficulty understanding Surname “County”, can you please elaborate as I am not aware that such exists.

      • Margot says:

The name County…. I have searched for this name some time ago.
It seems it was “Miss heard” and the incorrect spelling of County came from “Canty”
The earliest I found was 1804. This was a Dennis County on a ship called Venier from New York to Australia in 1854.

    • Lindie says:

My ancestors are the Stragmans (Joshua & his wife Hannah etc.) How can I find out where the gravestone (264) is actually located in the graveyard? I visited St |Mary’s about 7-8 years ago & could not find the location of the head stone.
My information is that this Joshua & Hannah also had a son Joseph b about 1789 & died 121 Feb 1873 in Thurles (date – the seat of many etc from civil registration death entry), but I can find no record of him being buried in Thurles) While other Strangman’s were Quakers, as far as I know this Joseph was CoI. Nor can I find evidence of him being buried in Waterford the seat of amny Strangman’s
Also my Strangmans’s were merchants (on Main St) & had premises in Cookes Lane & Kearney’s/Carneys Lane. They must be part of the wider Strangman clan which resided in Waterford & Clonmel butI cannot find any links to the wider Strangman family network.
Is there any other local history or information sources which might throw light on how mt Strangman’s got to Thurles?

A letter he wrote 15th Dec 1848 – Reminds me of current EU regulations

      Respected Friend,
My attention having been directed to an article on the Irish Fisheries in the Times of the 4th inst.
I take the liberty of offering a few observations upon it.

I would first premise that before pronouncing wholesale condemnation of the Irish fishermen as utterly incorrigible it would seem to me to be the more correct course to examine into existing causes and endeavour to discover a suitable remedy.

That numerous efforts made within the last two years by benevolent individuals to benefit Irish fishermen have been unsuccessful is unhappily too true, but whether this failure has been occasioned by the intractable character of the persons whose condition it was sought to ameliorate or by the unskilful application of the means to effect that object, the following case appears to me to afford an apt illustration.

During the famine year of 1847 – the neighbourhood in which I reside was placed under the supervision of the Waterford Auxiliary Relief Committee of the Society of Friends and they being anxious to encourage industrial employment at an early period directed their attention to the promotion of the coast fishery. With that object a sum of money was placed in the hands of a gentleman then residing at Ballinacourty at the Eastern side of the entrance of the bay of Dungarvan to assist the fishermen of that locality – He was a very benevolent person and considering the poorest and most destitute man stood the most need of aid, he made his selection from among that class – thus practically holding out an inducement to every applicant to appear as wretched and as miserable as possible – The result was similar to what it has been in many other places – after a few months trial he pronounced them to be indolent, lazy and ungrateful and that further efforts would be unavailing and he therefore returned the balance remaining in his hands.
On the opposite side of the same bay at a distance of about two miles is the Ring District and the
wretched condition of its inhabitants, a hardy race of fishermen, was at the same period brought under the notice of the Committee by the Vicar of the Parish James Alcock – He stated that their boats were out of repair, their oars had been burned as fuel, their clothing furniture and fishing gear had been pledged for food and in one village alone one hundredfamilies were daily receiving public relief. Besides a supply of twenty barrels of meal – the sum of £20 (subsequently increased to £57) was forwarded to him, to try what could be effected by means of small loans to enable the fishermen to repair their boats and resume their usual occupation; thus making them producers of food instead of mere consumers of it.
The judicious Vicar who possesses the talent – a qualification much needed in Ireland – of being able to assist persons without making them dependent and also of teaching them to rely upon their own exertions – made his selection solely from among the well conducted – sober and industrious – those who were anxious and willing to help themselves and truly important have been the results of his valuable exertions.

In company with another member of our Committee I visited the District during the present week and gratifying indeed was it to find that the boats were repaired and in active operation, clothing furniture and fishing gear had all been released from the Pawn Office. Many of the dwellings had been newly thatched – Smiling countenances met us on every side and we were informed that not a single individual was receiving Public Relief – Here then are two districts peopled by the same Celtic race – their dwellings separated only by a narrow bay Benevolent efforts are made in each and observe the striking contrast in the results.

Is it the character of the inhabitants – or the system of management that has produced so remarkable a difference?
But further, one of the first objects that attracts the notice of our inquirer when investigating the fishery question is the singular difference between the English and Irish fishery laws.
For example the Trammel Net, a most effective engine – cheap in its construction – inexpensive in its working and most productive in the quantity of fish it captures is allowed to be freely used by day as well as night in Great Britain, but by an act of the Imperial Legislature in 1842 it is decreed that this valuable instrument, essentially the poor man’s Net, be set on the Irish Coast before sunset or if it is suffered (except in very stormy weather) to remain in the water after the sun has risen above the horizon the poor fisherman so offending incurs the forfeiture of the net, and a penalty of £5 for each offence!
The extreme hardship of this singular enactment having been represented to the government, a clause was introduced into the fishing act of 1845 empowering the Irish Fishery Board to relax or wholly remove the unpolitic daylight restriction. But although more than three years have elapsed
since the Act received the Royal Assent and repeated remonstrations have been made to the Board I find by a recent communication from Dublin that up to the end of last month in no one instance had the slightest relaxation been granted and thus the relief clause of 1845 has been virtually a dead letter.

Of the vast importance of this net to the Irish fishermen Ishall give just one example. On our recent visit to the Ring district we entered some of the cottages and saw in them considerable quantities of salted fish which the fishermen had cured and were (owing to their improved circumstances) keeping in store for sale until the season called Lent. A careful inventory of each man’s stock was made for us and on calculating the whole at the market price we found much to
our surprise and gratification that the value of it amounted to £1,500!! (Fifteen hundred pounds)
This be it observed was in addition to what was sold in a fresh state for the current family expenses, it had all been caught within the last 3 months by the Trammel Nets supplied to twenty one boats and the fishermen assured us and we have no reason to doubt their assertion that but for the absurd daylight restriction they would have captured nearly double the quantity of fish and that thrice the number of boats would have eagerly embarked in the same lucrative employment.

Much – very much – more might be written on this interesting subject but the foregoing will doubtless suffice to show – First that if aid be given to persons merely because they are wretched and destitute it cannot excite surprise that such efforts, however well intentioned, prove unsuccessful and secondly that before the Irish fisherman is pronounced to be “an imbecile” he should at least first have the shackles removed that fetter his exertions and be allowed the same
measure of freedom from restriction that is enjoyed by his fellow craftsmen in England.

My experience and observation on fishing operations warrant me in saying that if Paddy is but put in the right path and enabled to discover the sweets of good wages he will proceed with a degree of persevering energy fully equal to his Saxon brethren. Like the un-reclaimed and half tilled land upon which he lives the soil is good and by the exercise of skill and judicious management may be made to yield a rich and abundant harvest.

      I am respectfully,
      Joshua Wm Strangman

I have only just come across your website and wish I’d found it years ago. The family I am searching for is that of John Sweeney, born c. 1842, son of Edward Sweeney and Margaret Brennan. John emigrated to New South Wales in 1863 (I think – if I’ve found the right one). From the immigration records, I think he had a sister Hannah who travelled with him.
I will be in Thurles at the end of this month and would love to track down graves or find more information about the family – names, where they lived, anything really. The problem is I’m in a hurry as I am flying out of Australia on Monday 10th September and I have discovered your site on Friday 7th September!!
I know there’s not much chance of hearing from you before Monday but I would appreciate any help anyway.

    Thanks very much.

      Hi Shelly,
Do you have any address in Thurles Town or indeed Tipperary County here in Ireland?
      Regards.
      George

      • Shelley Farrow says:

        Hi George
Sorry I wasn’t able to see your reply before I left, but I don’t have any address for the family. However, I was lucky enough to stay in a B & B in Two Mile Borris where the owner, Pierce Duggan, provides genealogy assistance for Tipperary. I went to the Tipperary Family History Research Centre in Tipperary Town but they couldn’t find a John Sweeney with those parents or find a marriage for the parents in Thurles. They did find a marriage for Edward Sweeney and Margaret “Bannon” with a daughter Hannah but I’m not sure that they are correct either as that Hannah would have been the same age as John, not 3 years younger as recorded in the original immigation record. The Centre also looked at the microfilm (for an extra fee) to see whether it had not been transcribed correctly and contacted North Tipperary but with no success. The information provided to me was for Thurles Parish but no further detail. No address on the marriage certificate or on their children’s birth certificates.

I have ordered the marriage certificate of a Hannah Sween(e)y in NSW as a guess that she might be the right one. (There were only two feasible possibilities.) Hopefully she will have the same parents and some more detailed information about where she came from.

Is there usually more detail than names, parishes, dates and witnesses/sponsors in the original parish records?

        Regards
        Shelley

  12. Martha Bowes says:

Are all these thought to be Church of Ireland gravestones, or might there be Catholics buried here?

    • George says:

      Hi Martha,
About 95% are Roman Catholic, with 5% with assorted other beliefs.

      • Laura says:

How come so many RC’s are buried in Protestant Church grounds?

        • George says:

Firstly remember that all Churches in Ireland prior to the Reformation in the 16th-century, were of the same religion, Roman Catholic ruled over by the Church of Rome. This would change with English King Henry VIII [1491-1547] declaring himself as head of the church in England. This new Reformation thus begun, saw a following of Western Christian Churches that were totally separate from the Roman Catholic Church, and included Baptists, Presbyterians and members of the Lutheran [Martin Luther 1483-1546, who believed that the Bible is the central religious authority] Church.

Since Ireland was a colony and ruled over by England; in 1534, King Henry VIII put an end to papal jurisdiction in the British Isles, after the then Pope had failed to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon.

This Reformation forced those wishing to hold on to their large tracts of land in Ireland, to change their religious views. Later the Penal Laws were imposed here in Ireland in an attempt to force Irish Catholics and other Protestant dissenters to accept the established Church of Ireland or Protestantism. The penal laws would remain in place in part up until 1829.

Church buildings would begin to change hands during this period; some practising Protestantism while others retained their Roman Catholic ethos. Graveyards did not change; remaining common ground for both religions. In more recent times, within new graveyards maintained by County Councils, both these major religions are still being buried within the same grounds.

    Hello

Great site …I only wish there were more like the. I am researching the Lanphier’s of Parkestown for my sister in-law and have a number of gaps that need more information to tie things together. This site has already provided a start. Blanche Langley whom I believe was a daughter to Thomas Langley of Archerstown and Catherine Nicholson of Turtulea (daughter of John and Blanche) married John Pennefather Lanphier. However I do not have a date or place of where they married….could they possibly have married in the parish of either of her parents Thomas or Catherine. Similarly I am unable to find a death/burial record for Blanche Lanphier (nee Langley) or her husband John Pennefather Lanphier.

James Quin and Ann Hough and their children left in 1840 for Quebec, and I would like to know more about the relatives they left behind. A few of them seem to be buried at St. Mary’s. I assume many more are buried there but the graves have no stones- is there a register containing the names of those interred in the cemetery? Is there a cemetery in the Rossestown area that they might have been more likely to use?

  26. Susan Zeitunian says:

    Hello,
Thank you so much for this wonderful website.

I wonder if you would be able to help me please. I am trying to locate the grave of my ancestors Richard Harney and Mary Shea. They married on 1 Mar 1832, recorded under the parish of Moyne ad Templetuohy. The record states that Richard was from Loughmore Parish and Mary from Manselstown. After their marriage Richard was farming in Manselstown as recorded on the Ireland, Griffith’s Valuation 1848-1864. They were both recorded as living in 1863 when their son William along with his sister Mary Ann arrived in Australia. I believe Richard was born about 1797 and Mary Shea about 1808.
Would you have any idea where they may be buried?

Also, recorded directly under Richard Harney on the Griffith’s Valuation in Manselstown is Richard Maher who married Mary Shea’s sister Margaret. Margaret was baptised on 17 Aug 1814 with home of Manselstown and married Richard Maher on 27 Jun 1835. I would very much like to find their graves as well.

On the list of inscriptions for St Mary’s Churchyard there is a Richard and Mary Ann Harney, but these are a different couple, Richard Harney and Mary Ann King, I believe. This Mary would have been born about 1831. I am coming to Tipperary in June this year and would like to be able to locate the headstone in St Mary’s Churchyard for the Richard and Mary Ann in St Mary’s as they fit into another Harney line which is being researched by a lady in the USA. The location is 494.

Would be most grateful for any assistance you can give. Thank you.
    Kind regards,
    Sue Zeitunian

  27. George says:

Per my very competent researcher Mssr. Dr. Maurice Dooley: “Your correspondent is correct in that Richard Harney of Loughmore married Mary Shea of Manselstown on 1st March 1832 in Moyne-Templetuohy parish. There were no Harneys in Loughmore baptism register prior to 1836 so we would have no information on Richard’s origins. Presumably he came into Loughmore parish from elsewhere before he went on to marry the Shea woman in 1832. That marriage was one of two marriages on the Thursday before Shrove, not at all unusual as marriages tended to cluster in groups of up to 8 or 10 on days just before Lent as Lent and Advent were “closed seasons” for the “solemnisation” of marriage. Catholic marriages could take place at any time on any day of the year, but not with solemnisation, i.e., with candles, music and other fripperies. This made no difference anyway, because up to 1851 Catholic marriages practically never were in church but in the Parish Priest’s house and had no fripperies anyway. It was just an exchange of consent taking a few minutes, and then home for a dance if the home was big enough, a honeymoon in bed, and back to work in the morning. Very practical in contrast to the nonsense nowadays!
The marriage entry in the Moyne register says “Richard Harny of Loughmore, certified by the Revd Mr Mullally Junior, and Mary Shea, Manselstown Moyne Parish, were joined in marriage in presence of Revd Patrick Ryan and James Shea and Thos Finelly.” [The certification of freedom to marry was issued by Fr William Mullally who was curate to his uncle Fr James Mullally, the PP, who was inactive and nearing death — he died in December 1832 — hence the reference to the nephew as “Junior”. The three witnesses, all male, was not unusual either as the 1563 law which required that marriages be celebrated before the priest mentioned “two or three witnesses”. The Fr Patrick Ryan would have been the curate, living with the PP in Templetuohy.

Richard Harney did well as he was marrying into a substantial Shea farm of 44 Irish acres (in the Tithe Applotment Book in 1827) (38 Statute acres in Griffith in 1850 for Richard Harney, with 44 for Richard Maher).]

Two of the Harneys of Whitefield in Loughmore parish went on to become priests, Fr Pat who died in 1887 and his nephew James who died in 1986.

The Richard who lived in Manselstown would presumably have been buried, like the Sheas, in Moyne old graveyard which adjoins the church in Moyne. That graveyard is well looked after, but back in the early 1800s only a small fraction, about 8%, of burials had tombstones, due to poverty and the remnants of an old penal law of the 1600s which forbade burials in old suppressed abbeys — another relic of Henry VIII’s greed.
    Best regards, George.

Also, would you be able to give me some details on the Harney priests that Dr. Dooley mentioned above; Fr Pat who died in 1887 and his nephew James who died in 1986? I have found that Fr James Harney is buried in Holycross Old Cemetery, the information I have states ‘Community Centre headstone’. But I would really like to know who their parents were, their ages please and any other information you may have, as I am connected to the Harney family of Whitefield.

    Thank you.
    Kind regards,
    Sue Zeitunian

I’d just like to add my thanks to all who are involved in providing this service. Those of us who ended up far from our roots are grateful for your efforts. I’d like to offer a bit of “reverse genealogy” in return by letting possible relatives in Tipperary know a little about some of their possible relatives abroad. The one caveat is that I’m uncertain if I found the right ancestor, but let’s presume, for now.

IF the John and Catherine Leatham buried in St. Mary’s cemetery [517] are my great-great grandparents, as some evidence suggests, they had a son named John (c. 1825 – 28 Dec 1893), a member of the RIC. His son, Norbert (name eventually standardized to ‘Latham’, emigrated to the U.S. in 1899. One of his sons, James, was my father. Like my great grandfather, I too worked for a time as a police officer (in NYC), although most of my career was in the U.S. Navy. My wife and I have raised two sons, Conor and Taylor, who now have children of their own.

I know there are Melbourne’s buried at St Mary’s but unless I am missing them, I cannot see any references on here? Do you know of any local history of this family and in particular Charles H Melbourne who died around 1987?

    Bonjour James,

I’m writing to you from France where, with some French friends, I am researching Antoine Thomson d’Abbadie for an upcoming colloquium and possible publication.

I have found your very interesting website, and would like to ask as to whether you have any additional information re his Tipperary in-laws, specifically his father-in-law: Anthony Thompson who was born in Thurles and was the father of Elizabeth d’Abbadie. I see on your website the inscription on the grave. Do you have a photograph of the headstone?

Slán go fóill agus best regards from the Loire Valley,

  33. Jenny Doyle, Australia says:

Thank you for this excellent resource. My great great grandmother was Maria Grace, descended from the Grace family of Brittas, Tipperary. I am trying to locate where the Graces of Tipperary are buried and find any inscriptions that may help with my family history research. I know that George Grace, Esq, barrister, died 1824, is buried in St Mary’s, Clonmel, but I haven’t been able to find any others. I recently contacted Tipperary Studies and have been very generously sent an extract from a document which describes both the Archer Tomb from circa 1520 (included in your list) and also the Grace Memorial, for John Grace and Eleanor Purcell, on the far left or north of the church. Is there a reason why this memorial isn’t included in the list eg no longer standing? Also I’m wondering if there are any other Grace memorials in or around the church, or if anyone knows where they might be? I could send more specific information on names and approximate dates if that would help. Kind regards and thank you.

  34. Dr James Binkley says:

Does the inscription or memorial exist for Sir Francis Bryan at Clonmel St. Mary’s Church? I have looked everywhere for a picture or a reference and found nothing.

Hope someone with a big heart will help a fellow researcher.

    God bless.

    • George says:

Sir, I regret to inform you that there is no visible text on Sir Francis Bryan’s tombstone at Clonmel’s Old St. Mary’s (Church of Ireland), Church. The oldest headstone that is readable in the attached graveyard to the Church building, dates only back to 1625 and no known portrait of Sir Francis Bryan, or his poetic verse is known to exist currently. See https://www.thurles.info/2022/09/08/tipperarys-vicar-of-hell/. Several tombstones exist of that period (1550) none sadly are identifiable
